FAIRHOPE’S BEST KEPT SECRETS: HIDDEN FOOD & DRINK

a plate of food

Fairhope is known for its charming downtown and the views over Mobile Bay. But the real magic is in the places you would walk right past if you did not know to look.

These are the spots locals love and visitors rarely find on their own. Small-batch bacon made on site, a chocolate shop with a Belgian secret, a cottage supper served one night a week. Here is a guide to Fairhope’s best-kept food and drink secrets, all of them worth seeking out.

Fairhope Chocolate

Fairhope Chocolate is a true hidden gem for anyone with a sweet tooth. Chef Jule Roach makes nearly everything in house, from French Levain sourdough and croissants to scratch gelato, cakes, pies, and seasonal sorbets. But the real star is the chocolate, each piece handcrafted with care.

The most extraordinary find is the selection of Neuhaus Belgian chocolates. Neuhaus is a rare sight in the United States, available at only a handful of shops, and Fairhope Chocolate is one of them. You can build your own box, which makes a beautiful gift or a very good reason to treat yourself.

Bill E’s Small Batch Bacon

Bill E’s is a local institution built around some of the finest small-batch bacon you will ever taste. Crafted right on site, that tender, sweet, savory bacon is the star of the menu, turning a simple BLT, burger, or sandwich into something you remember.

It is an easygoing outdoor spot on Highway 181, a short drive from downtown, and exactly the kind of place locals send visitors to with a knowing smile. Do what the regulars do and grab some bacon to take home while you are there.

Char 32

Char 32 is a cozy, intimate restaurant that has quietly become a favorite among those who appreciate a perfectly cooked steak. Tucked away from the busier dining spots, it offers a refined but welcoming atmosphere where the focus is firmly on quality. The steaks are the centerpiece, from ribeye to filet, cooked to your liking and served with classic sides. A hidden gem well worth seeking out.

Provision

Often called Fairhope’s Living Room, Provision is a coffee shop by day and a wine bar by night, and a community hub either way. Start your morning with expertly brewed coffee, or settle in during the evening with a glass from a wine list that spans the globe. There is even a wine director on staff to help you find the right bottle.

The food is as thoughtful as the drinks. The signature Avocado West Indies Toast, on a sliced baguette with crab and onions, is a modern nod to a dish invented right here on Mobile Bay in the 1940s. Order a cheese board, find a comfortable seat, and stay awhile.

Nini Squares

Nini Squares is a delightful hidden gem for pizza lovers, and a great pick for families. This cozy pizzeria specializes in square-cut pizzas made with fresh ingredients and a lot of care, from classic pepperoni to more adventurous combinations. The square-cut style means every slice has the right balance of crust, sauce, and toppings. A warm, welcoming spot for a casual meal.

Thyme on Section

Thyme on Section has earned its place as a local favorite, thanks to an inviting atmosphere and signature dishes that keep people coming back. The Thyme Burger and the truffle fries are the calling cards, comfort food with a touch of gourmet flair. Whether you stop in for a quick lunch or settle in for a leisurely dinner, it feels quintessentially Fairhope.

The Wash House

Tucked behind the Marriott Grand Hotel in Point Clear, the Wash House is an upscale dining experience that is as elegant as it is secluded. It is a well-kept secret among locals who appreciate fine dining in a serene, candlelit setting. The Chateaubriand is the signature and pairs beautifully with one of their handcrafted cocktails. For a special night out, this is the place.

Mr. Gene’s Beans

Set inside CK Brown’s 1900 home, a nod to one of Fairhope’s founding Single Tax Colony families, Mr. Gene’s Beans is easy to stroll right past, which is exactly why it belongs on this list. Inside you will find ice cream, coffee, and gourmet popcorn, and the signature Fairhope Float, a frozen yogurt, cappuccino, whipped cream, and cinnamon concoction that locals treat as a rite of passage. Serving smiles since 1993.

Sallie

If you want the most under-the-radar meal in Fairhope, this is it. Sallie is an intimate supper served out of a historic Pine Street cottage by Chef Sally Stringfellow, who spent more than twenty years in professional kitchens before opening her own place. On Thursday evenings she welcomes a limited number of guests and cooks every course from her open kitchen, the way a private chef would, with seasonal Southern plates built on French technique. Private breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and events are available by appointment. A true hidden gem.
